← Back to Water Polo Hub (Rules, Pool Size, Scoring & Equipment)
Water polo scoring is simple and fast-paced. Teams score by throwing the ball into the opponent’s goal while defending their own.
How to Score a Goal
A goal is scored when:
• the ball completely crosses the goal line
• it goes between the goalposts and under the crossbar
• no fouls or violations occur during the play
Each goal is worth 1 point.
🧮 Scoring System
• 1 goal = 1 point
• no extra points for distance or style
• the team with the most goals wins
Example:
• Team A: 10 goals
• Team B: 8 goals
• Result: Team A wins 10–8
🎯 Types of Goals
Goals can be scored in different ways:
• open play (passing and shooting)
• counter-attacks (fast breaks)
• penalty shots (after fouls)
All goals count the same.
⚠️ Disallowed Goals
A goal will not count if:
• a foul occurs before the shot
• the shot is taken illegally (e.g. from wrong position)
• the ball does not fully cross the line
⏱️ Match Scoring
• games are played in 4 quarters
• teams score throughout each quarter
• total goals at the end determine the winner
🏆 Tie Situations
If the score is tied:
• the match may end in a draw
• or go to extra time or penalty shootout (in knockout games)
