📜 Water Polo Rules

Water polo rules are designed to keep the game fast, physical and fair. Two teams compete by passing a ball and trying to score goals while staying afloat in the water.
🏁 Starting the Game
• the game begins with a swim-off
• players race from their goal line to the centre to gain possession
• play restarts with a swim-off at the beginning of each period
🤽 Basic Gameplay Rules
• players must tread water at all times
• only one hand can be used to hold the ball (except goalkeeper)
• players pass, swim and shoot to score
• teams must move the ball within a set time (shot clock)
🔄 Possession and Play
• teams pass the ball to create scoring chances
• possession changes after a goal, turnover or foul
• players cannot hold the ball underwater when challenged
⚠️ Fouls
There are different types of fouls:
Ordinary Fouls
• minor contact or rule breaks
• result in a free throw
• defender must give space
Exclusion Fouls
• major fouls like holding, sinking or pulling back
• player is removed for 20 seconds
• opposing team plays with an extra player
Penalty Fouls
• committed inside the 5 metre area
• results in a penalty shot
🚫 Common Violations
• holding the ball with two hands (non-goalkeeper)
• sinking the ball to avoid a defender
• pushing off another player
• interfering during a free throw
🧤 Goalkeeper Rules
• can use both hands
• can punch the ball
• can move freely within the goal area
⏱️ Game Structure
• played in 4 quarters
• each quarter typically 8 minutes (game time)
• shot clock limits attacking time
🏆 Winning the Game
• each goal = 1 point
• the team with the most goals wins
• ties may go to extra time or penalties
