Rugby Union scoring is based on different ways to earn points through tries and kicks. Teams aim to outscore their opponents by combining attacking play and accurate kicking.
🧮 Ways to Score
There are four main ways to score in rugby union:
• Try = 5 points
• Conversion = 2 points
• Penalty Goal = 3 points
• Drop Goal = 3 points
🏉 Try
A try is the main way to score.
• scored by grounding the ball in the in-goal area
• worth 5 points
• gives the team a chance to attempt a conversion
🎯 Conversion
• taken after a try
• kicked through the goal posts
• worth 2 points
The kick is taken in line with where the try was scored.
⚠️ Penalty Goal
• awarded after a foul by the opposition
• kicked from the ground or tee
• worth 3 points
⚡ Drop Goal
• scored during open play
• player drops the ball and kicks it as it bounces
• must go through the posts
• worth 3 points
📊 Example Score
• Team A: 1 try (5) + 1 conversion (2) = 7 points
• Team B: 2 penalty goals (6 points)
• Result: Team A wins 7–6
⏱️ Match Outcome
• games last 80 minutes
• points are added throughout the match
• the team with the most points wins
