A rugby union field (pitch) is a large rectangular area with additional space behind each goal line called the in-goal area. The field includes several markings that guide gameplay and positioning.

📐 Field Dimensions

Rugby field size can vary slightly, but standard measurements are:

• length (playing area): up to 100 metres

• in-goal area: 10 to 22 metres (each end)

• width: up to 70 metres

Goal Posts

• positioned on the goal line

• shaped like an “H”

• crossbar height: 3 metres

• post height: typically at least 5.6 metres above the crossbar

📍 Field Markings

The rugby field includes key lines:

• 22-metre lines

• 10-metre lines

• try lines

• touchlines (sidelines)

These markings help control gameplay and restarts.

🎯 In-Goal Area

• area behind the try line

• used for scoring tries

• players must ground the ball here to score

🔄 Playing Areas

• in-goal areas at each end

Teams attack and defend across the full length.
