Rugby Union rules are designed to keep the game physical, structured and fair. Two teams compete by carrying, passing and kicking the ball to score points.
🏁 Starting the Game
• the match begins with a kick-off from the centre
• the ball must travel at least 10 metres
• play restarts with a kick-off after points are scored
🏉 Basic Gameplay Rules
• players can run forward with the ball
• passes must go backwards or sideways
• players can kick the ball forward
• the ball must stay within the field of play
💥 Tackling Rules
• players can tackle the ball carrier
• tackles must be below the shoulders
• dangerous tackles result in penalties
After a tackle:
• the ball carrier must release the ball
• tackler must roll away
Rucks
• formed when the ball is on the ground after a tackle
• players from both teams compete for possession
• players must stay on their feet
Mauls
• formed when the ball carrier is held upright
• teammates bind together and push forward
• the ball remains off the ground
Scrums
used to restart play after minor infringements
8 players from each team bind together
teams push to win possession of the ball
Lineouts
• used when the ball goes out of bounds
• players line up and jump to catch the throw
• structured restart of play
⚠️ Common Violations
• forward pass – illegal pass forward
• knock-on – dropping the ball forward
• offside – being in front of play
• high tackle – contact above shoulders
These result in scrums or penalties.
🏆 Winning the Game
• games last 80 minutes (two halves)
• the team with the most points wins
