Netball rules are designed to keep the game structured, fast and fair. Two teams compete by passing the ball and scoring goals while following strict movement and positioning rules.
🏁 Starting the Game
• the game begins with a centre pass
• taken from the centre circle
• alternates between teams after each goal
🔄 Basic Gameplay Rules
• players pass the ball down the court
• must move the ball through thirds
• only certain players can enter specific areas
• only Goal Shooter (GS) and Goal Attack (GA) can score
Movement Rules
• players cannot run with the ball
• must pass or shoot within 3 seconds
• must keep one foot planted (pivot) when holding the ball
🚫 Contact Rules
• no physical contact is allowed
• defenders must stay at least 0.9 metres away when marking
• contact results in a penalty
⚠️ Common Violations
• stepping – moving both feet without dribbling
• held ball – holding longer than 3 seconds
• offside – entering areas not allowed for your position
• contact – interfering with an opponent unfairly
Position Rules
Each position has specific areas they can enter.
• players must stay within their allowed zones
• breaking position rules results in a penalty
🔁 Possession
• possession changes after a goal or turnover
• also changes after rule violations
• quick passing is key to maintaining possession
🏆 Winning the Game
• each goal = 1 point
• games are played in quarters
• the team with the most goals wins
