← Back to Badminton Hub (Rules, Field Size, Scoring & Equipment)

Badminton uses a rally scoring system, meaning a point is awarded on every rally regardless of who served. The aim is to win points consistently and reach the target score before your opponent.
🧮 How Points Are Scored
A player or team scores a point when their opponent:
• fails to return the shuttlecock
• hits the shuttlecock out of bounds
• hits into the net
• commits a fault
Every rally results in a point.
🎯 Game Format
• games are played to 21 points
• a player must win by at least 2 points
Examples:
• 21–18 = win
• 22–20 = win
⚖️ Deuce Rule
If the score reaches 20–20, this is called deuce.
• play continues until one side leads by 2 points
• the maximum score is 30 points
Example:
• 30–29 = win (sudden death)
🔁 Serving and Scoring
• if you win a rally, you score a point
• you also gain the serve
serves alternate depending on the score (even/odd courts in singles)
👥 Doubles Scoring
Scoring is the same as singles, but:
• teams have two players
• players rotate positions when winning points on serve
🏆 Match Format
Matches are usually:
• best of 3 games
• The first player or team to win 2 games wins the match.
⚡ Why Scoring Matters
Badminton scoring rewards:
• consistency
• quick reactions
• smart shot placement
Because every rally counts, players must stay focused throughout the match.
