A badminton court has standard dimensions used in both recreational and professional play. The court is rectangular and divided into two halves by a net.
📐 Court Dimensions
The official badminton court size is:
• length: 13.4 metres
• width (singles): 5.18 metres
• width (doubles): 6.1 metres
The court is longer than it is wide, and the width changes depending on whether singles or doubles is being played.
🏸 Net Height
The net runs across the centre of the court.
• height at posts: 1.55 metres
• height at centre: 1.524 metres
The slight dip in the middle is part of the official setup.
📍 Court Layout
The badminton court includes several important lines:
• baseline (back boundary)
• sidelines (different for singles and doubles)
• service lines
• centre line
These lines determine whether a shot is in or out and where serves must land.
🎯 Singles vs Doubles
• Singles uses the narrower side boundaries but full length
• Doubles uses the wider court but slightly shorter service area
This creates different strategies depending on the format.
Playing Area Around the Court
In professional matches, extra space is required around the court for movement.
• allows players to move freely during fast rallies
• provides safety and fair play
⚡ Why Court Size Matters
• The size of the court affects:
• player movement
• shot selection
• game strategy
Badminton courts are designed to create fast rallies and require quick reactions.
