Football (soccer) rules are designed to keep the game fair, flowing and competitive. Two teams compete to score goals while following a set of rules that control movement, contact and gameplay.

🏁 Starting the Game

• the match begins with a kick-off at the centre

• one team starts with possession

• play restarts with a kick-off after each goal

⚽ Basic Gameplay Rules

• players use feet, head or body to control the ball

• players cannot use hands or arms

• only the goalkeeper can use hands (inside the penalty area)

• the ball must stay within the field boundaries

🔄 Ball In and Out of Play

The ball is out of play when:

• it completely crosses the sideline or goal line

• the referee stops play

Play restarts with:

• throw-in (sideline)

• goal kick or corner kick (goal line)

🚫 Fouls

A foul occurs when a player:

• kicks or trips an opponent

• pushes or holds

• makes dangerous contact

Fouls result in:

free kicks

penalty kicks (if inside the penalty area)

🟨 Yellow and 🟥 Red Cards

Referees can give cards for misconduct:

• yellow card = a caution or being “booked”

• red card = player sent off

A team must continue with fewer players after a red card.

📍 Offside Rule

The offside rule prevents players from gaining an unfair advantage.

A player is offside if:

• they are closer to the opponent’s goal than the ball

• and fewer than two defenders are between them and the goal

• when the ball is passed to them

🧤 Goalkeeper Rules

• can use hands only inside the penalty area

• cannot pick up a deliberate pass from a teammate’s feet

• responsible for defending the goal

🏆 Winning the Match

• each goal = 1 point

• the team with the most goals wins

matches are typically 90 minutes (two halves)

If scores are tied, some matches go to extra time or penalties.

⚡ Why Rules Matter

Football rules ensure:

• fair competition

• continuous gameplay

• player safety

Understanding the rules helps players improve positioning, timing and decision-making.
