A team-by-team breakdown ahead of BBL 15, featuring a strong mix of Australian stars and international firepower.
The Big Bash League returns for its 15th season, and once again the competition arrives in a packed summer window filled with cricket across the world. Despite ongoing discussion around the BBL’s long-term structure, this year brings plenty of optimism — boosted by high-profile signings, strong representation from England and Pakistan, and the added intrigue of Ashes players becoming available after January 8.
With the T20 World Cup on the horizon, the BBL also doubles as a proving ground for players hoping to push their way into national selection. Here’s how each team shapes up — starting with the first four clubs.

Adelaide Strikers
Captain: Matt Short
Coach: Tim Paine
International Players: Hasan Ali (PAK), Luke Wood (ENG), Jamie Overton (ENG)
How they’re shaping up
After reaching a final in BBL13, the Strikers fell to the bottom last season in a tough opening year under new coach Tim Paine. Their biggest challenge was inconsistency at the top of the order, particularly at a traditionally batter-friendly Adelaide Oval.
With Jake Weatherald leaving for the Hurricanes and D’Arcy Short not retained, Adelaide has refreshed its batting lineup by bringing in Jason Sangha and Mackenzie Harvey — two players capable of adding stability and explosiveness.
The bowling unit, however, is where the Strikers needed the biggest reset. Their death overs were a major problem last season, leading to some heavy totals being conceded. New signings Hasan Ali and Luke Wood have been brought in specifically to solve this issue.
Player to Watch — Matt Short
The Strikers’ leader remains the heartbeat of the team. A back-to-back BBL MVP, Short had a quieter season last year due to injury, but he still produced moments of brilliance — including a blistering century in their record 251-run performance.
With the T20 World Cup approaching, Short will be eager to rediscover peak form and strengthen his case for national selection.
Availability
- Hasan Ali should be available unless selected for Pakistan’s January T20Is.
- Luke Wood and Jamie Overton could miss games if chosen for England’s Sri Lanka white-ball tour.
- Test stars Travis Head and Alex Carey are available after January 8.

Brisbane Heat
Captain: Usman Khawaja
Coach: Johan Botha
International Players: Shaheen Shah Afridi (PAK), Tom Alsop (ENG), Colin Munro (NZ)
How they’re shaping up
Brisbane’s title defence never got going last season, with the Heat sliding to second last on the ladder. Determined to bounce back, the Heat made one of the marquee moves of the draft by securing Pakistan superstar Shaheen Shah Afridi — a massive statement of intent.
With Spencer Johnson ruled out through injury, Afridi becomes even more important. His ability to swing the new ball and dominate powerplays adds vital punch to a pace unit already featuring Xavier Bartlett and Michael Neser.
The loss of legspinner Mitchell Swepson hurts their spin depth, but the Heat still possess enough versatility through their middle order.
Player to Watch — Matt Renshaw
Renshaw had a breakout BBL season, leading the Heat’s run tally and proving his value across multiple roles. He’s started the summer strongly and showed promise in recent ODIs. His power, range of scoring options and ability to adapt make him one of the Heat’s most important players.
Availability
- Afridi may miss matches if Pakistan confirms their T20Is vs Sri Lanka in January.
- Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja will be available once the Ashes concludes.

Hobart Hurricanes
Captain: Nathan Ellis
Coach: Jeff Vaughan
International Players: Rehan Ahmed (ENG), Chris Jordan (ENG), Rishad Hossain (BAN)
How they’re shaping up
After years of being labelled underachievers, the Hurricanes finally broke through last season with a spectacular title win capped by victory in a thrilling home final.
Hobart has kept the majority of its championship core together while adding key pieces, including Jake Weatherald, Beau Webster and veteran quick Jackson Bird. They also retained superstar Tim David despite heavy interest from rival clubs — arguably their most important signing of the off-season.
Player to Watch — Mitchell Owen
Mitchell Owen’s rise from a little-known allrounder to one of the most explosive young talents in world T20 cricket was one of last season’s biggest storylines. Promoted up the order, Owen unleashed extraordinary powerplay hitting, finishing the year with a stunning century in the final.
Now a global franchise target with an international debut under his belt, Owen enters BBL|15 with huge expectations. How he handles increased attention will be one of the season’s most fascinating subplots.
Availability
- Jake Weatherald and Beau Webster are unavailable until after the Ashes.
- Rehan Ahmed has recovered from injury but could miss games if selected for England’s Sri Lanka tour.
- Rishad Hossain (BAN) is cleared for a full season and will be crucial with Hobart’s reduced spin stocks.

Melbourne Renegades
Captain: Will Sutherland
Coach: Cameron White
International Players: Mohammad Rizwan (PAK), Tim Seifert (NZ), Hassan Khan (PAK)
How they’re shaping up
The Renegades entered a rebuild last year under new leaders Will Sutherland and Cameron White, but the results didn’t turn around, extending their finals drought to five of the last six seasons.
Determined to fix their inconsistent batting, Melbourne made a statement by drafting Pakistan superstar Mohammad Rizwan — one of the world’s most reliable white-ball openers. They also traded for Hurricanes left-hander Caleb Jewell, who was seeking a larger role.
Where the Renegades look genuinely dangerous is with the ball. Tom Rogers has been one of the BBL’s most reliable wicket-takers, and now he’s joined by Jason Behrendorff, a proven spearhead from Perth. Add Brendan Doggett to the mix, and the Renegades may quietly possess one of the most balanced pace attacks in the competition.
Player to Watch — Jake Fraser-McGurk
Fraser-McGurk once looked like Australia’s next breakout batting star, but his form tapered off last season. Even so, his ceiling remains enormous — highlighted by his breathtaking 95 off 46 balls against the Heat in the final match of BBL|14.
Now 23, and already with international experience, he’ll be hungry to deliver a consistent campaign and push his case for future national selection.
Availability
- Rizwan may miss games if selected for Pakistan’s Sri Lanka T20Is.
- Seifert could be picked in New Zealand’s squads for India in January.
- Nathan Lyon and Brendan Doggett won’t be available until after the Ashes.
- Will Salzmann is out for the season due to injury.

Perth Scorchers
Captain: Ashton Turner
Coach: Adam Voges
International Players: Finn Allen (NZ), Laurie Evans (ENG), David Payne (ENG)
How they’re shaping up
Perth — a five-time champion — missed the finals last season for just the third time in their storied history. But the Scorchers aren’t known for overreacting. Instead, they’ve doubled down on their long-standing blueprint: trust the local core, reinforce the culture, and add proven pieces where needed.
Laurie Evans and David Payne return after past successful seasons with the club, strengthening both the middle order and the pace attack. Joel Paris also comes back to Perth, filling the void left by Jason Behrendorff’s departure.
The Scorchers’ fast-bowling stocks remain strong despite injuries, and their all-round depth is unmatched — especially with Aaron Hardie, Ashton Agar and Mitch Marsh all part of the squad.
Player to Watch — Mitchell Marsh
Despite being second on Perth’s all-time run-scoring list, Marsh has barely appeared in the BBL over the last few years due to his heavy international schedule. This season is different. Barring a surprise Ashes call-up, he’s set for a full campaign — and that instantly transforms the Scorchers’ top order.
A Marsh–Finn Allen opening combo could be one of the most explosive in the league, particularly with Marsh looking to fine-tune his game ahead of the T20 World Cup.
Availability
- Jhye Richardson will miss the opener while training with the Test squad but is expected to return for Game 2.
- Lance Morris is out for the summer following back surgery.
- Josh Inglis becomes available after the Ashes.
- Payne will arrive after finishing the ILT20.
- Finn Allen may leave for New Zealand’s white-ball series vs India in January.

Sydney Sixers
Captain: Moises Henriques
Coach: Greg Shipperd
International Players: Babar Azam (PAK), Sam Curran (ENG), Jafer Chohan (ENG)
How they’re shaping up
The Sixers made one of the biggest moves of the off-season by drafting Babar Azam — one of the premier T20 batters on the planet. Add Sam Curran, a proven all-format match-winner, and the Sixers suddenly have one of the most dangerous overseas duos in the competition.
As always, their local core is rock-solid: Sean Abbott, Daniel Hughes, Jordan Silk, Ben Dwarshuis and Josh Philippe form one of the most reliable units in the league. Kane Richardson also arrives to strengthen the death bowling, replacing Jackson Bird.
The Sixers’ consistency has been the backbone of their sustained success — and this season looks no different.
Player to Watch — Babar Azam
Few players attract global attention like Babar. His debut in the BBL is massive for the league, and how he adapts to Australian pitches — and the Sixers’ tactical style — will be one of the biggest storylines of BBL|15.
There is even a possibility of seeing Babar opening alongside Steven Smith later in the season — though Pakistan’s Sri Lanka T20Is may disrupt that dream pairing.
Availability
- Sean Abbott will miss the early rounds due to a hamstring injury.
- Steven Smith joins after the Ashes concludes.
- Mitchell Starc is set to play his first BBL games in 11 years, fitness permitting.
- Josh Hazlewood could join late depending on his rehab progress.

Sydney Thunder
Captain: David Warner
Coach: Trevor Bayliss
International Players: Sam Billings (ENG), Reece Topley (ENG), Lockie Ferguson (NZ), Shadab Khan (PAK)
How they’re shaping up
The Thunder were hit with a major blow when superstar spinner Ravichandran Ashwin withdrew due to injury, but the rest of their squad remains stable and well-rounded.
Their spin department is still strong with Tanveer Sangha, Chris Green and Tom Andrews all capable of playing together. With David Warner leading the batting, Thunder will again rely on his experience — supported by Ollie Davies, Cameron Bancroft and a group of promising young hitters.
The home conditions at Sydney Showground can be tricky for batters, so Thunder will once again depend on grit and smart match-ups rather than brute hitting power.
Player to Watch — Sam Konstas
Konstas has fallen out of Test discussions, but that may work in Thunder’s favour — he should be available for the entire tournament. The young right-hander showed real flashes last season, producing two half-centuries and demonstrating the technique and temperament to become a long-term star.
After a strong start to his Sheffield Shield campaign, this could be the season where he fully blossoms in T20 cricket.
Availability
- Reece Topley will start the season, then depart for the SA20.
- Lockie Ferguson replaces him once his ILT20 commitments end.
- Shadab Khan may miss games due to Pakistan’s January series.
- No Thunder players are involved in the Ashes.
