Ultimate Frisbee Rules

Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact team sport played with a flying disc. The rules are simple but require teamwork, movement and fair play.
The objective is to pass the disc to teammates and catch it in the opponent’s end zone to score a point.
🏁 Starting Play (The Pull)
Each point begins with a throw called the pull.
- The defending team throws the disc down the field to the attacking team
- The receiving team gains possession where the disc is caught or lands
- Play begins once the disc is picked up and put into play
🥏 Movement with the Disc
Players are not allowed to run while holding the disc.
- A player must stop after catching the disc
- The player then has a limited time to pass it
- Teammates must move into space to receive the pass
⏱️ Stall Count
The player holding the disc has 10 seconds to throw it.
- A defender counts out loud from 1 to 10
- If the throw is not made before 10, possession changes
- This is called a turnover
🔄 Turnovers
A turnover occurs when the defending team gains possession of the disc.
This can happen if:
- The disc touches the ground
- A pass is intercepted
- The disc is thrown out of bounds
- The stall count reaches 10
When a turnover happens, the other team immediately takes possession from that spot.
🚫 Non-Contact Rule
Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact sport.
- Players cannot push, block or physically interfere with opponents
- Contact results in a foul
This rule helps keep the game safe and fair.
⚠️ Fouls and Violations
Players are responsible for calling their own fouls.
Common fouls include:
- Contact between players
- Blocking or interfering with movement
- Disrupting a player’s throw
If a foul is called, play may stop and resume depending on the situation.
🏆 Scoring
A point is scored when a player catches the disc inside the opponent’s end zone.
- Both feet must be in bounds when catching the disc
- After a point, teams switch directions
- Play restarts with another pull
🌍 Spirit of the Game
One of the most unique aspects of Ultimate Frisbee is the concept of Spirit of the Game.
Players are expected to:
- be honest and respectful
- follow and enforce the rules themselves
- resolve disputes without referees
This creates a strong culture of sportsmanship.
