🔢 Volleyball Scoring

← Back to Volleyball Hub (Rules, Field Size, Scoring & Equipment)

Volleyball uses a rally scoring system, meaning a point is awarded on every rally regardless of which team served. The goal is to win sets by reaching the target score before your opponent.

🧮 How Points Are Scored

A team scores a point when the opponent:

• fails to return the ball

• hits the ball out of bounds

• commits a fault

• hits the net illegally

Every rally results in a point.

🎯 Set Format

• sets are played to 25 points

• a team must win by at least 2 points

Examples:

• 25–20 = win

• 26–24 = win

⚖️ Deuce Rule

If the score reaches 24–24, play continues until one team leads by 2 points.

Examples:

• 26–24 = win

• 30–28 = win

🏆 Match Format

Matches are usually played as:

• best of 5 sets

The first team to win 3 sets wins the match.

🔁 Final Set (Deciding Set)

If the match goes to a fifth set:

• the set is played to 15 points

• must still win by 2 points

This shorter set is often called the deciding set.

⚡ Why Scoring Matters

Volleyball scoring rewards:

• consistency

• teamwork

• smart play under pressure

Because every rally counts, teams must stay focused throughout the match.
