Squash rules are designed to keep the game fast, fair and continuous. Players take turns hitting the ball against the front wall while sharing the same court.
🏁 Starting the Game
• a match begins with a serve
• players decide who serves first
• the server must stand in a service box
🏸 Serving Rules
To make a legal serve:
• the ball must hit the front wall above the service line
• it must land in the opponent’s back quarter
• at least one foot must be inside the service box
After winning a point, the server alternates service boxes.
🔄 Rally Rules
During a rally:
• the ball must hit the front wall before the floor
• it can hit side or back walls at any time
•only one bounce is allowed before returning
• players alternate hitting the ball
A rally continues until a point is scored.
⚠️ Faults
A player loses the point if they:
• hit the ball below the tin
• hit the ball out of bounds
• allow the ball to bounce twice
• fail to hit the front wall
commit interference
🔁 Let and Stroke (Interference)
Because players share the same space, interference rules are important.
• let – rally is replayed if interference prevents a fair shot
• stroke – point awarded if a winning shot was prevented
📍 Boundaries
• the ball must stay within the marked lines
• hitting above the out-of-bounds line results in a fault
🏆 Winning the Game
• games are played to 11 points
• must win by 2 points
• matches are usually best of 5 games
⚡ Why Rules Matter
Squash rules ensure:
• fair play in a shared space
• fast-paced rallies
• consistent scoring
Understanding the rules helps players improve positioning and strategy.
