Disc Golf Course Layout

A disc golf course is made up of a series of holes, each with a starting point and a target basket. Players throw discs from the tee area toward the basket, aiming to complete each hole in the fewest number of throws.

Courses are usually set in parks or natural environments and are designed to challenge accuracy, distance and strategy.

📏 Basic Course Structure

A standard disc golf course typically includes 9 or 18 holes.

Each hole consists of:

• a tee area (starting point)

• a fairway (playing area)

• a target (basket with chains)

Players move from one hole to the next until the course is completed.

🟩 Tee Area

The tee area is where each hole begins.

• Players must release the disc from within the tee area

• Tee pads are often made of concrete, rubber or grass

• Some courses include multiple tee positions for different skill levels

🌲 Fairway

The fairway is the main playing area between the tee and the basket.

• It can be open or filled with obstacles such as trees

• Players aim to throw accurate shots to stay within the fairway

• Obstacles are used to increase difficulty and strategy

🥏 Target (Basket)

The target is a metal basket with hanging chains.

• The disc must land inside the basket to complete the hole

• Chains help catch and slow the disc

• Each hole has a clearly marked basket

📍 Hole Layout and Par

Each hole has a designated par, which is the expected number of throws to complete it.

Typical par values include:

• par 3 (most common)

• par 4

• par 5

Hole layouts vary in length and difficulty depending on the course design.

⚠️ Out of Bounds Areas

Some courses include out of bounds (OB) areas.

• If a disc lands out of bounds, a penalty may be applied

• OB areas can include paths, water or restricted zones

Course Variety

Disc golf courses can vary widely in design.

Common types include:

• park courses

• wooded courses

• open field courses

• mixed terrain courses

Each type offers different challenges and playing styles.

⚡ Why Course Layout Matters

The layout of a disc golf course affects:

• shot selection

• difficulty level

• player strategy

Well-designed courses provide a balance of distance, accuracy and technical skill.
