📏 AFL Field Size
← Back to AFL Hub (Rules, Field Size, Scoring & Equipment)
An AFL field is a large oval-shaped ground, much bigger than most other sports fields. The size can vary between venues, but all fields follow similar layouts and markings.
📐 Field Dimensions
Unlike many sports, AFL fields are not fixed in size, but typical dimensions are:
length: 135 to 185 metres
width: 110 to 155 metres
This makes AFL one of the largest playing fields in sport.
Goal Posts
Each end of the field has four posts:
• 2 tall central posts (goal posts)
• 2 shorter outer posts (behind posts)
These are used for scoring goals and behinds.
📍 Field Markings
The AFL field includes key markings:
• centre square – used for centre bounces
• centre circle – surrounds the centre square
• 50-metre arcs – mark scoring distance zones
• goal squares – near each set of posts
These markings help organise gameplay and positioning.
🔄 Playing Area
• oval shape allows play in all directions
• no offside rule
• players spread across the entire ground
⚡ Why Field Size Matters
The size of an AFL field affects:
• player endurance and fitness
• speed of ball movement
• team strategy and spacing
Larger grounds create more open play and fast transitions.
