AFL uses simple but important equipment that allows players to perform at a high level while staying safe in a physical sport.

AFL Ball

The AFL ball is unique in shape and design.

• oval-shaped for kicking and bouncing

• slightly pointed ends

• designed for grip and long kicks

👟 Boots

AFL boots are designed for speed and traction.

• studs on the sole for grip on grass

• lightweight for running long distances

• support quick changes in direction

🛡️ Protective Gear

Players wear minimal protection compared to other contact sports:

• mouthguard – protects teeth and jaw

• optional soft padding (shoulders or ribs)

Protection is important due to tackling and physical contact.

🧍 Clothing

Players typically wear:

• sleeveless jersey

• shorts

• long socks

Clothing is lightweight to allow maximum movement and endurance.

📏 Field Equipment

• four goal posts at each end

• marked oval field

• boundary lines and centre markings

🎯 Optional Equipment

Additional items may include:

• ankle or knee supports

• tape for fingers and joints

• gloves (rarely used)

⚡ Why Equipment Matters

The right equipment helps improve:

• kicking control and accuracy

• grip and stability on the field

• player safety during contact

Using proper gear allows players to perform confidently and reduce injury risk.
