NRL interchange rules: the 2026 bench
Scope: The ordinary interchange arrangements announced for the 2026 NRL season. Other competitions and medical exceptions have separate rules.
The bench list and the interchange limit are different things. Six named reserves does not mean a coach can use six new players.
The three numbers to know
- Six named bench players: numbers 14–19.
- Four may be used: the ordinary rule allows a coach to use four players from that group during the match.
- Eight interchanges: the team remains limited to eight player interchanges.
What changed?
The 2026 announcement expanded the available bench from four to six while retaining the limit of four used players and eight interchanges. It gives a coach more choices about which reserves to introduce.
Medical replacements
Medical replacement and concussion procedures have additional conditions. Match officials administer those rules; this introductory guide does not establish eligibility for an extra replacement.
Do not apply this NRL-specific arrangement automatically to Super League, NRLW, international or community competitions.
