Pickleball Scoring
← Back to Pickleball Hub (Rules, Field Size, Scoring & Equipment)
Pickleball uses a unique scoring system where only the serving team can score points. Games are typically played to 11 points, and a team must win by at least two points.
Scoring works slightly differently in doubles and singles matches, but the same basic principle applies: points can only be scored when your team is serving.
🔢 How Points Are Scored
Points are scored when the serving team wins a rally.
A rally may be won if the opposing team:
• Hits the ball out of bounds
• Hits the ball into the net
• Breaks a rule such as the kitchen rule
• Fails to return the ball before it bounces twice
If the receiving team wins the rally, they do not score a point, but they gain the opportunity to serve.
👥 Doubles Scoring
Most pickleball games are played in doubles, with two players on each team.
The score is announced using three numbers.
Example:
5 – 3 – 1
This means:
• First number = serving team score
• Second number = receiving team score
• Third number = which server is serving (Server 1 or Server 2)
Each team normally has two servers per turn, except at the very start of the game.
🔄 Serving Rotation
In doubles pickleball:
1. The first player serves.
2. If they lose the rally, the serve moves to their partner.
3. If the partner loses the rally, it becomes a side out and the serve moves to the other team.
This rotation continues throughout the match.
Singles Scoring
In singles pickleball, the scoring system is simpler.
Key rules include:
• Only one server per side
• The server serves from the right side when their score is even
• The server serves from the left side when their score is odd
Only the server can score points.
🏆 Winning a Game
Most pickleball games are played to:
• 11 points
• A team must win by 2 points
Some tournaments use longer formats such as:
• 15 points
• 21 points
These are more common in competitive or professional matches.
⚡ Important Scoring Rule
Starting the Game
• At the beginning of the match:
• The starting team has only one server
• This player is called Server 2
This rule helps keep the game fair.
