When did Fiji’s team begin?
Fijian players had made their mark in overseas rugby league before a national team and domestic competition developed in 1992. Fiji took part in the World Sevens and Pacific Cup that year. Those beginnings should be distinguished from the earlier careers of individual Fijian players abroad. The Bati’s first World Cup followed three years later.
Key milestones
- 1992 — Fiji entered international rugby league and competed in the Pacific Cup.
- 1995 — The Bati appeared at their first men’s World Cup.
- 2008 and 2013 — Fiji reached consecutive World Cup semi-finals.
- 2017 — A 4–2 quarter-final win over New Zealand secured a third consecutive semi-final appearance.
Understanding this team
The Bati’s 2017 victory was decided entirely by penalty goals. It is a useful reminder that rugby league history includes low-scoring contests as well as large try totals. This profile concerns the men’s national side, with other representative teams retaining separate records.
