Lacrosse rules keep the game fast, structured and competitive. Two teams use sticks to pass, carry and shoot the ball while trying to score goals.


🏁 Starting the Game

• the game begins with a face-off at centre field

• two players compete to gain possession

• play restarts with a face-off after each goal


🥍 Basic Gameplay Rules

• players use the stick to pass, catch and shoot

• the ball must stay within the field boundaries

• players move the ball by running or passing

• teams aim to create scoring opportunities


🏃 Movement and Possession

• players can run freely while carrying the ball in their stick

• must keep control by cradling

• teams must advance the ball into the attacking area within a time limit (in some formats)


⚠️ Contact and Checking

Lacrosse allows controlled physical contact (mainly in men’s lacrosse):

• body checking – using the body to challenge opponents

• stick checking – hitting an opponent’s stick to dislodge the ball

Illegal contact results in penalties.


🚫 Common Violations

• offside – not enough players on each side of the field

• crease violation – attacking players entering the goal crease

• holding – using the stick or body illegally

• slashing – dangerous stick contact


Goalkeeper Rules

• protects the goal inside the crease

• can use their body and stick to block shots

• has special protection within the crease area


🔁 Penalties

• fouls can result in time penalties

• offending player may be sent off temporarily

• opposing team plays with an advantage


🏆 Winning the Game

• each goal = 1 point

• games are played in quarters

• the team with the most goals wins
