Basketball rules are designed to keep the game fast, fair and competitive. Two teams compete to score points by shooting the ball into the opponent’s hoop while defending their own.


🏁 Starting the Game

• the game begins with a jump ball at centre court

• the referee tosses the ball into the air

• one player from each team jumps to gain possession


🏀 Movement Rules

players must dribble (bounce the ball) while moving

if a player stops dribbling, they must pass or shoot

taking steps without dribbling is called travelling


🔄 Passing and Possession

• players can pass the ball to teammates

• possession changes after a score, turnover or violation

• teams must move the ball within a set time (shot clock)


⚠️ Violations

• Common violations include:

• travelling – moving without dribbling

• double dribble – dribbling, stopping, then dribbling again

• out of bounds – ball leaves the court

• shot clock violation – failing to shoot in time


🚫 Fouls

A foul occurs when there is illegal physical contact.

• pushing, holding or hitting an opponent

• blocking incorrectly

• excessive contact

Fouls can result in free throws or possession for the other team.


Key Rules

• players cannot stay in the key for more than 3 seconds (offensive players)

• defenders must avoid illegal contact

• players must respect court boundaries


🏆 Winning the Game

• the team with the most points at the end wins

• games are divided into quarters

•if scores are tied, overtime is played
