Table tennis rules are simple to understand but require precision, timing and control. Players must follow serving, rally and scoring rules to compete fairly.

🏁 Starting the Game

A match begins with a serve.

• players decide who serves first

• serves alternate every 2 points

in doubles, serve rotation follows a set order

🏓 Serving Rules

To make a legal serve:

• the ball must rest on an open palm

• it must be thrown upward at least 16 cm

• the ball must bounce on your side first

then bounce on the opponent’s side

In doubles:

• serves must go diagonally across the table

🔄 Rally Rules

During a rally:

the ball must bounce once on each side

players must return the ball before it bounces twice

players alternate hitting the ball

A rally continues until a point is scored.

⚠️ Faults

A player loses the point if they:

• miss the ball

• hit the ball into the net without it crossing

• hit the ball off the table

• allow the ball to bounce twice

• touch the table with their free hand

🔁 Let Rule

A “let” is called when:

• the serve touches the net but still lands correctly

• play is stopped due to interference

The point is replayed with no score change.

👥 Doubles Rules

In doubles matches:

• players must alternate shots

• serves must be diagonal

• teammates take turns hitting the ball

⏱️ Match Format

• games are played to 11 points

• players must win by 2 points

• matches are usually best of 5 or 7 games

⚡ Why Rules Matter

Table tennis rules ensure:

• fair play

• fast and consistent gameplay

• competitive balance

Understanding the rules helps players improve and enjoy the game more.
