Pickleball Rules (Advanced Guide)
Pickleball is a simple sport to learn, but there are several detailed rules that become important as players gain experience. This guide explains additional pickleball rules including faults, serving details and court violations.
📜 Serving Rules
The serve starts every rally in pickleball and must follow several rules.
Underhand Serve
The serve must be hit with an underhand motion with the paddle contacting the ball below the waist.
Diagonal Service
The ball must travel diagonally across the net into the opponent’s service court.
One Serve Attempt
In most cases players only get one serve attempt, unless a let occurs.
Serving Position
At least one foot must remain behind the baseline when serving.
⚠️ Pickleball Faults
A fault ends a rally and results in a loss of serve or a point for the opponent.
Common faults include:
• Hitting the ball out of bounds
• The ball hitting the net and not crossing
• Volleying from inside the non-volley zone
• Breaking the double-bounce rule
• Serving incorrectly
🚫 The Non-Volley Zone (Kitchen)
The non-volley zone is the area 7 feet from the net on both sides of the court.
Players cannot:
• Hit a volley while standing in the kitchen
• Step into the kitchen immediately after volleying due to momentum
Players are allowed to enter the kitchen only after the ball has bounced.
🔄 The Double Bounce Rule
One of the most unique rules in pickleball is the double bounce rule.
After the serve:
1. The receiving team must let the ball bounce once before returning it.
2. The serving team must also let the return bounce once.
After these two bounces, players may hit volleys.
🔢 Server Rotation in Doubles
In doubles pickleball:
• Each team has two servers
• The serve begins with the player on the right side
• When a rally is lost, the serve moves to their partner
• After both players lose the rally, the serve switches to the other team
This rotation helps ensure fairness and balanced play.
🏓 Line Rules
Pickleball uses the following line rules:
• If the ball touches a line, it is considered in
• Serves that land on the non-volley zone line are faults
• Sidelines and baselines count as in bounds
⚡ Advanced Gameplay Situations
As players improve, they may encounter more advanced rule situations.
Momentum Rule
Players cannot step into the kitchen after hitting a volley if momentum carries them forward.
Obstruction
A rally may be replayed if a player is distracted or obstructed during play.
Equipment Fault
If a paddle breaks or equipment interferes with play, the rally may be stopped depending on the situation.
