Garcia’s header helps Atletico de Kolkata beat NorthEast United FC

Luis Garcia fired in a stunning header in the second half to help Atletico de Kolkata end their four-match winless run by registering a 1-0 win over NorthEast United FC in their return leg ISL fixture at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan on Tuesday.

Garcia struck in the 51st minute, beating the towering Spanish World Cup winner Joan Capdevilla in the middle and the win helped ATK go three points clear of Chennaiyin FC in the lead position.

It was Borja Fernandez who brilliantly intercepted the ball and passed it on to Jofre Mateu whose measured cross from the left set up Garcia for the match winner.

Atletico now have 16 points from nine matches. They have four away and one home game left.

The scoreline could easily have been 2-0 but sub Arnal Llibert squandered an easy opportunity after being set up by Sanju Pradhan in front of an open net.

If NEUFC were brilliant with their defence, they were equally pathetic with their attack with the Indian duo of Durga Boro and Alen Deory wasting chances which derailed their recovery plans.

NEUFC had the best chance in the 83rd minute when Alen put in a great ball inside the six-yard box but an unmarked Seimeinlen Doungel wasted the free header only to put the ball over the bar.

Earlier, NEUFC made two changes to their starting line-up bringing in Massamba Lo Sambou in the central midfield and Durga Boro up front in place of Len Doungel and James Keene.

ATK, on the other hand, replaced Biswajit Saha with N Mohanraj in the backline in the only change to their line-up.

The first-half was full of intensity as both NEUFC and ATK went hammer and tongs to go one up.

ATK were sharp with their attack but it was the visitors’ Spanish World Cup winner Capdevilla who stood in their way.

NEUFC, on the other hand, had better ball possession and got as many as five corners in the first-half but with an innocuous attack in the Indian duo of Alen Deory and Durga Boro, the Guwahati franchise cut a sorry figure.

Garcia had an inspiring surge in the sixth minute but he was a tad faster than his striking partner as ATK took some time to settle down.

ATK’s first real opening came in the 11th minute when NEUFC goalkeeper TP Rehenesh brought down Fikru on the edge of the box in the right flank but the defence proved too strong once again.

The home side once again had a taste of NEUFC’s strong defence when Garcia’s powerful right footer from the edge of the box was blocked brilliantly by Capdevila in a 29th minute.

ISL: FC Goa is a club that knows how to connect with its fans

If India is a sleeping football giant, then Goa is its heart. To witness the love Goans have for football you have to be in the state during the months of April and May, when hundreds of local inter-village football tournaments are organized. The level of involvement in these games drives home the point that football is one of Goa’s oldest abiding passions.

Goa is home to over 180 registered football clubs and has arguably the best youth development system in the country, in collaboration with the Australian Sports Outreach Programme (ASOP) and the Football federation of Australia (FFA). Besides, the Goa Football Association is the first state football association in the country to amend its constitution and make it similar to that of FIFA and AIFF.

No surprises then that Goa is the only Indian state where football is the official state sport. This seriousness in intent is reflected in the outcome. Till the beginning of this year Goa was home to three professional football teams — Dempo, Salgaocar and Churchill — all playing in the top-tier of Indian professional football. On April 13, 2014 it became home for a fourth. Mumbai-based Venugopal Dhoot, Goa’s Dattaraj Salgaocar and Shrinivas Dempo won the bid for the Goa franchise in the upcoming India Super League.

The club recognizes the love the locals have for the sport and I was delighted to hear from Mr Shrinivas Dempo that the club name was chosen by the people. Fans were asked to suggest a name for the Goa franchisee. After much deliberation the name, FC Goa, suggested by young Goan lad Velviro Pinto was chosen. This exercise, besides being a great strategy to engage fans, also helped create a sense of belonging among the fans towards the club. Loyalty can never be bought, it is always earned.

The reason why I like the name is because it is a no-nonsense name that remains true to the brand that the Goa franchise is trying to create. Something that is reflected the other elements of the team. The team jersey has been created by Adidas, the German company known for its focus on performance. On first glance I thought it looked very similar to the German national football team jersey. It is only later I noticed hints of the team colors – orange and blue. Together the two colors beautifully merge action with calmness. Very similar to how a football team must merge attack with defense. To me the colors symbolize resilience, power and stability. This is pretty close to what the team stands for.

To understand a team, you need to understand its personality. One of the best ways to gauge this is by understanding their logo. Mr Dattaraj Salgaocar was kind enough to provide me a detailed understanding of the official club logo, a combination of Goa’s state animal – the gaur or Indian bison – and a shield.

“For FC Goa we wanted to have a logo which will convey what we stand for, the values we believe in and the essence of Goa,” Salgaocar said. “FC Goa stands for strength, integrity and pride. A single club which has united three families and its enduring values. The team embodies the spirit of Joga Bonito, playing the beautiful game the way it should be played – with pace, power and passion.

Dhoni, Kohli doubtful for gala ISL opening

Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his deputy Virat Kohli, who are co-owners of ISL Chennai and Goa franchisees respectively, are unlikely to participate in the gala ISL opening on October 12.

“I am not sure if the BCCI will allow them to be present on the inauguration in the middle of a series (India-West Indies). It’s difficult but you never know,” Atletico de Kolkata co-owner Utsav Parekh told reporters today.

India will have its second ODI in Delhi on October 11 and it remains to be seen whether the duo makes a flying visit to Kolkata en route to Vizag, the venue for the third ODI on October 14.

However, Parekh said the bigwigs of Bollywood, cricket and corporate world with the likes of Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan (Chennai), Salman Khan (Pune), John Abraham (Guwahati), Ranbir Kapoor (Mumbai), Varun Dhawan (Goa), Sachin Tendulkar (Kerala) and city’s Sourav Ganguly have confirmed their participation.

The star team owners will take a lap of the stadium followed by a spectacular 45-minute opening ceremony by Bollywood heart-throb Priyanka Chopra and Varun Dhawan.

There will also be a host of top notch industrialists including Mukesh and Nita Ambani who is also the founding chairperson of ISL, the Munjals (Hero Motocorp), the Salgaocars who will grace the occasion along with Praful Patel, president of the All India Football Federation that is supporting the tournament.

“It’s rarely that we get to see such a gathering of both Bollywood, cricket and corporate world,” Parekh said.

The ISL opening ceremony will begin at 5 pm with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee formally opening the 11-week-long tournament that will be kicked off with the home side Atletico de Kolkata squaring up against Mumbai City FC.
