Indian Hockey Team Returns Home to Heroes’ Welcome

The Incheon Asian games gold medal winning Indian men’s hockey team returned home to a rousing welcome by Hockey India (HI), fans and friends at the Indira Gandhi International airport in New Delhi on Sunday.

The Sardar Singh-led team landed at the airport at 1 am and were received by Hockey India President Mariamma Koshy and CEO Elena Norman amid the beat of drums and dhols.

“It’s a proud moment for the whole country. We have worked hard for last 8 months to achieve this target and now we feel proud having achieved it. There was pressure since we could not win Asiad gold for last 16 years, but we were determined to win this time,” Indian hockey team captain Sardar Singh said.

India clinched the gold at the Asian games after 16 years, defeating arch rival Pakistan in a nail-biting penalty shootout. The win ensures India a direct ticket to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

India vs West Indies 2014: Would Chris Gayle have had a huge impact in the series?

West Indies will take on India in a five-match One-Day International (ODI) series in India. The West Indies will not have the services of star batsman Chris Gayle in the one-day series. Indrajit Dutta looks at how serious Gayle’s absence could be for the West Indian side.

No Chris Gayle in the side— potentially a very deflating prospect. Gayle’s reputation as a fearsome batsman precedes him, but the last time he played a complete ODI series in India was way back in 2007. In addition to this, Gayle’s form in the recent past has been nothing to write home about. The question that arises then is whether this explosive West Indian line-up would miss him.

In the 2002 seven-match ODI series between India and West Indies, the flamboyant left-handed opening batsman had an excellent tournament as he hammered two hundreds in seven games. His 140 at Ahmedabad, when India chased 325, remains memorable. His form was one of the reasons why the West Indies beat India 4-3 in that particular series. In the last two or three years, however, Chris Gayle has not been in the form of his life in international cricket. Although he remains as belligerent as ever the form that turned him into the one of the most explosive batsman in world cricket has eluded him.

To add to this the West Indian squad that has been selected is packed with batsmen who can destroy bowling attacks and play a well-crafted one day-knock. On the one hand, there are the likes of the destructive Kieron Pollard, the inimitable Dwayne Bravo, and the explosive Dwayne Smith, while other hand they have the elegant Darren Bravo, the crafty Lendl Simmons and the experienced and astute Marlon Samuels. Even Darren Sammy and Andre Russell can use the long handle effectively. On the face of it, it appears that they have enough ammunition to ensure that Gayle’s absence will not impact them. The one problem that, however, has continued to dog the West Indies for some time now is inconsistency. In the last series in India in 2013 they lost the one-day series 2-1.

While Gayle’s absence is no doubt good news for any bowling side, the last time West Indies toured India — in 2013 — Gayle did not do anything substantial, his highest score being 32. Interestingly it was Bhuvneshwar Kumar who scalped him four times out of four in the two-test series. Bhuvneshwar finds a place in the Indian squad which will take on the West Indies this time. Whether or not Bhuvneshwar would have the same impact against Gayle in the one-day series is a matter of conjecture, but it cannot be denied that Gayle was far from convincing when facing Bhuvneshwar last time.

In the recently contested one-day series against Bangladesh, Gayle did reasonably well with three half-centuries with a best of 64. While a hundred eluded him, he perhaps would have been disappointed. The Indians are a much stronger side than Bangladesh and going into this series, bigger scores would have been to his benefit. However as luck would have it, injury has ruled Gayle out. While the West Indies would no doubt be better off with him in the side, they appear to have enough ammunition to combat his absence. One thing is for sure; the Indian crowds will be poorer without Chris Gayle.

I wanted to be part of football revolution, says MS Dhoni

CHENNAI: If seven years with Chennai Super Kings made MS Dhoni something of a Chennaiite, the Indian captain on Monday signalled that he will continue his affair with the city by purchasing a stake in Indian Super League franchise Chennaiyin FC.

The CSK skipper is now a partner in the Chennai franchise with Vita Dani and Abhishek Bachhan.

“As all of you know, I began my sporting activities as a footballer and was a goalkeeper for my school and then shifted to cricket since we didn’t have a wicketkeeper in our team,” Dhoni told reporters on Monday.

“And as a far my association with Chennaiyin FC is concerned, I have always been a big fan of football and Manchester United and I follow English Premier League. It gives immense happiness to be a part of this team and I’m sure, with the kind of players we have in our ranks, we’ll make Chennaiyin FC a great side.”

The Indian skipper is second current player after India vice-captain Virat Kohli (FC Goa) to co-own an ISL team.

Former India greats Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly are co-owners in Kerala Blasters FC and Atletico de Kolkata, respectively.

Dhoni feels the way ISL is being organised and the investor interest it has gained could help the football league become as big a hit as the Indian Premier League.

“Why not? When IPL started seven years ago nobody thought it would become such a big event.. It happened only because people supported it. Many important people have been involved in the [football] league, the media is very excited about it and it’s time for the common people to come forward and extend their support. I appeal to all football lovers to come to the stadium and watch the matches because for a player nothing is more satisfying than playing in front of a full house,” Dhoni said.

Noting how important it is to develop football at the grassroots level, he said Chennaiyin FC will focus on more the development of the sport rather than on winning trophies and championships. “It’s important to develop the available talent.

We are still trying to improve our football standards and I think a team can’t make it big unless it has proper development at the grassroots level.

We are fortunate to have some intentionally established players in the team and I’m sure our local players will benefit a lot by playing alongside them,” Dhoni said.

On his choice of the Chennai club, Dhoni said, “As I said my association with CSK for seven years has helped me mingle with the local people and learn their culture. It would have been extremely difficult for me to captain CSK and own a Kolkata, Delhi or Mumbai [football] team at the same time. Given my connect with the city, Chennai was a natural choice. I’m thankful to Chennai for giving me so much love. This city has passion for sports and, from the support CSK has had all these years, I’m sure it will be the same for Chennaiyin FC.”
